The World Was Beautiful. I Was Not.

When survival silences wonder

Beauty is right in front of us.

However, when our minds are elsewhere — when we are distressed, depressed, in pain, or grieving — we cannot see, sense, or feel it, no matter how breathtaking the world around us may be.

When sorrow settles into the nervous system, the brain shifts into survival mode, and even the most radiant beauty fades into the background of pain.

Yesterday, the sun seemed brighter, the air felt warmer, and I found myself capturing the flowers’ simple beauty.

I’m surviving the grief, and on some days, even that feels heavy.
