About Me

A Journey of Loss, Healing, and Purpose

I’m Leah Halpert, and if you’re reading this, you’re likely carrying the weight of loss. I know that pain well. When I lost my husband, I didn’t just lose a partner, I lost the anchor of my life. The emptiness was vast, and I couldn’t imagine a future without him.

But grief has a way of transforming us. It taught me that love doesn’t die; it evolves into something stronger, becoming the lens through which we heal. Through my grief, I discovered my purpose: to write and share my journey with others walking through their own valleys.

As a professor and biomedical scientist, I’ve spent my career in research, writing, and teaching. Now, I write to offer hope and healing through my Story of Mei-Li series and personal posts on LinkedIn and Substack. My work is a way of saying, “You are not alone.” It’s a story of resilience, faith, and healing in the face of heartbreak. Writing became my way of honoring my husband’s memory and offering hope to those who feel lost and broken.

Grief connects us. Through my words, I want to remind you that healing is possible, and together, we can find purpose even in the darkest times.

With love,

Remembering Jim

Losing my husband was not just a loss of a partner but of a part of my soul. He was the person who anchored me through life’s storms, and his passing created an emptiness so vast, it felt like the world itself had vanished.

As I navigated the overwhelming grief, I realized that my love for him didn’t fade with his absence. It became the lens through which I discovered my purpose. Through the pain, I found a deeper connection to myself and the world around me.

His passing not only left me with a profound sorrow but also ignited a new strength within me. It’s in his memory that I write, create, and share — as a tribute to him, and as a beacon of hope for others who are also carrying the weight of loss.

Though his physical presence is gone, his love and spirit continue to guide me. He remains my source of strength, and every day, I carry him with me, transforming grief into purpose, one word at a time.

Upcoming Books

BENEATH THE EASTERN STAR
Story of Mei-Li Series Book 1

In the heart of Maoist China, Mei-Li faces a life defined by her “black class” status, where every step is laden with struggle and sacrifice. What begins as a fight for survival soon becomes a battle for personal freedom and self-determination.

As she rises above the harsh constraints of her upbringing, Mei-Li embarks on an emotional journey that forces her to confront the unyielding power of oppression and the price of defying the system. Through the turmoil, she discovers her own strength and begins to carve a path toward something greater.

Beneath the Eastern Star is a poignant and powerful story of courage, sacrifice, and the unshakable pursuit of freedom in the face of overwhelming odds.

ACROSS THE SILENT LABYRINTH
Story of Mei-Li Series Book 2

As the world opens, Mei-Li steps into it — chasing the academic future she once only dreamed of. From the crowded lecture halls of China to the cold, unfamiliar streets of South Korea and the vast, disorienting promise of America, Mei-Li sacrifices everything to rise in a world that doesn’t always make space for her.

What unfolds is not just a cross-continental journey of ambition, but a profound reckoning with identity, belonging, and the personal cost of progress. Along the way, Mei-Li’s marriage fractures, her bond with her daughter strains to breaking, and her pursuit of success begins to chip away at her very sense of self.

Across the Silent Labyrinth is an emotionally raw second chapter in the Story of Mei-Li series — a tale of exile, perseverance, and the haunting silence that follows hard-won dreams.

THE CHOSEN PATH
Story of Mei-Li Series Book 3

Now rooted in the United States, Mei-Li finds herself caught between two worlds — the spiritual and the everyday. What starts as a time of healing and redemption quickly evolves into a journey filled with trust betrayed, a divine love, and loss, as she grapples with the echoes of her past and the wounds of her heart.

Torn between her divine calling and the heartbreak of the world, Mei-Li learns that the journey of the soul is far more complex — and more miraculous — than she ever imagined. From love, betrayal, divine love and loss, to spiritual warfare and divine restoration, she must confront a question no one else can answer: How do you trust a God who gives and takes away?

The Chosen Path is the powerful conclusion to Mei-Li’s journey — a raw, redemptive tale of surrender, spiritual awakening, and the unexpected grace that rises from devastation.

How do you navigate grief and loss in your life?

Grief has been a transformative journey for me. It has reshaped my perspective on life, loss, and love. Through my personal experience with the loss of my husband, I learned that grief doesn’t just leave a void; it opens up a space for growth, healing, and deeper understanding. I now channel this journey into my writing and speaking, aiming to help others find solace and strength in their own struggles.

What inspired you to write the Story of Mei-Li series?

The Story of Mei-Li series was born out of my own journey through profound loss, faith, and healing. As a scientist and academic, I always approached life from a logical standpoint. But it was the emotional, spiritual journey through my husband’s death that inspired me to create these stories. The series weaves themes of grief, healing, mental health, and divine purpose — subjects I know intimately and want to help others navigate.

How do you balance your scientific background with your creative writing?

My background in science has given me a structured, analytical approach to problem-solving and thinking. However, writing allows me to explore and express the more emotional and intangible aspects of life, like love, pain, and spiritual healing. Balancing both fields comes naturally because they complement one another: the science gives me a foundation of logic, while creativity allows me to understand and articulate the human experience in a deeper way.

How has your experience with loss shaped your work as a writer?

The loss of my husband completely transformed my view of the world. It deepened my connection to both the human condition and my faith. Writing became a way for me to process that grief and to honor my husband’s memory. Through my words, I hope to provide a light for others who are going through their own struggles, offering a message of resilience, healing, and divine purpose.

What message do you hope readers take away from Beneath the Eastern Star and The Chosen Path?

I hope readers feel empowered to face their own struggles with grace and faith. Both books are about finding meaning through hardship, recognizing that suffering isn’t an end, but a beginning of transformation. No matter how dark the path may seem, healing is possible, and we can find strength in our shared experiences.

How do you continue to move forward in life after such profound loss?

I move forward by embracing the lessons my grief has taught me. I no longer view loss as a thing to “get over” but something that becomes a part of me. In every step, I strive to live with purpose, honoring my late husband’s memory and using my experiences to connect with and help others. Writing, speaking, and engaging with my community are ways I channel my journey into positive action, continuing to learn and grow every day.
