Everyone inevitably confronts the same profound question, whether you think about it or not.
- Can Anyone Truly Define Life?
Last week, we delved into the origin of life from a scientific perspective and explored why, as a Biomedical Scientist, I believe in Intelligent Design. Today, we shift focus to examining life through the biblical perspective.
- A Theological Perspective: Purpose and Destiny
I believe that life is not just a result of random chance but is instead a product of divine creation with purpose and meaning.
- Life as a Gift from God
- Genesis 2:7 “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
📌 A human has a tripartite nature: body, soul, and spirit.
📍The best way to describe us is: “I am a spirit, I have a soul, and I live in a body.”
- God formed our physical flesh (body), breathed into us the breath of life (spirit), and made us a living soul (soul alive).
🔺 Spirit’s three main functions:
- Conscience: The part that discerns right from wrong and convicts us of sin. (Romans 9:1)
- Intuition: The direct sense of God’s will, independent of reasoning or logic. (Mark 2:8)
- Communion: The part that allows us to connect with and worship God. (John 4:24)
✳️ The spirit connects with God and receives divine revelation, while the soul (mind, emotions, and will) should submit to the spirit rather than lead it. The body serves as a vessel for both.
✳️ The soul processes thoughts and feelings, but if it leads instead of the spirit, a person may rely too much on human reasoning rather than faith.
👉 Life (spirit, soul, body) itself is a divine gift from God.
- Life’s Ultimate Purpose
The Bible reveals that God created mankind with a divine purpose.
❤️ To Reflect His Image and Glory
- “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” — Genesis 1:27 (KJV)
- “Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.” — Isaiah 43:7 (KJV)
Humans are the only part of creation made in God’s image (Imago Dei). This means we are designed to reflect His nature (love, wisdom, righteousness, creativity, and dominion over creation) and glory.
❤️ To Glorify God
- “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” — 1 Corinthians 10:31 (KJV)
We exist to worship and glorify God—not just through singing or prayer but through obedience, love, and service throughout our lives.
❤️ To Seek and Know God
- “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” — John 17:3 (KJV)
True life is found in knowing God through Jesus Christ. Our relationship with Him gives meaning and direction to our existence.
❤️ To Love and Be Loved
- “We love him, because he first loved us.” — 1 John 4:19 (KJV)
God is love (1 John 4:8), and He created mankind to experience and express love. The greatest commandment is to love God and love others (Matthew 22:37-39).
❤️ To Fulfill His Eternal Plan of Redemption
- “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” — John 3:16 (KJV)
Even before creation, God had a redemptive plan through Jesus Christ. Man was created with free will, and though sin entered the world, God’s ultimate purpose was to bring salvation through Christ so that people could choose Him and have eternal life.
❤️ To Spread the Gospel and Make Disciples
- “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” — Matthew 28:19 (KJV)
We are called to share the good news of Christ, helping others find salvation and purpose in Him.
❤️ To Reign with Him in Eternity
- “And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.” — Revelation 5:10 (KJV)
God’s plan extends beyond Earth—His ultimate purpose is for believers to reign with Him in eternity, restored to perfect fellowship with Him.
✳️ Reflection:
The Bible presents life as a gift, a journey, and a call to a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. As these verses show, life is not merely a physical existence but a spiritual journey enriched by our connection to God. Living in Christ gives us purpose, peace, and the promise of eternal life.
