What Is Life? – An Age-Old Mystery Still Debated (Part 1)

Everyone confronts the same question, whether you ponder it or not.

  1. Why I Write About LifeExploring Its Deeper Truths

I wasn’t sure what to write for the next topic of my newsletter, so I prayed, Lord, my pen is Your pen. I write for Your glory. Please show me what to write next.”

I didn’t receive an immediate answer initially. Instead, God guided me to spend my time researching how to publish books.

Two days later, on January 29, 2025, the Army UH-60 collided with Flight 5342 over the Potomac River, resulting in a midair explosion that tragically claimed the lives of all passengers on board.

🥲 My heart sank when I heard the news the next morning.

🥲 I found myself at a loss for words.

🥲 Since losing my husband a few months ago, the pain still lingers, as fresh and sharp as the cold air at times. My journey through grief has made my heart more tender to the suffering of others.

❤️‍🩹 I can hardly fathom the unimaginable grief those families are experiencing, losing their loved ones in such a tragic way.

😶 In that still moment, God spoke to me: “Write about life.”

“But that’s such a vast topic,” I responded, slightly taken aback.
I didn’t receive an explanation from God.

I knew His word was final.

So here I am, discussing Life with you.

  • Can Anyone Truly Define Life?  – A Boundless Question That Defies Definition

For centuries, humanity has grappled with two of life’s most profound questions: Where do we come from, and where are we going? These timeless inquiries have fueled curiosity and exploration, prompting scientific and philosophical debates.

Each field offers its own perspective on the origins of life and its purpose, often leading to differing conclusions about our existence.

Let’s dive into it!

  • The Scientific Perspective
  • Evolution and Random Selection

The scientific community, particularly in biology, has upheld the “theory of evolution” by natural selection, a concept popularized by Charles Darwin in the 19th century.

This theory proposes that life on Earth evolved through a lengthy and gradual series of random genetic mutations, with traits that improved survival being transmitted across generations. Over time, these small changes, shaped by environmental pressures, resulted in the remarkable diversity of life we observe today.

Scientists believed that random mutation and natural selection were the primary mechanisms behind the emergence of life. Life could arise and evolve without purpose, plan, or intention.

This scientific view was grounded in materialism—the belief that everything in the universe, including life itself, can be understood through natural processes without a higher power or divine intervention.

  •  The Limitations of the Scientific View

However, while Darwin’s theory shows how life has adapted over time, it does NOT address the deeper questions of why life exists and how it came to be.

In recent decades, this theory has faced significant challenges.

  • The fine-tuning of the universe, where conditions appear precisely calibrated for life, raises questions about whether random chance alone could account for life’s origins.
  • The intricate biological systems revealed by scientists raise further questions about the role of intentionality or purpose behind life.
  • The origins of life itself—how matter and energy first combined to create the first living organisms—remain a mystery. Although several hypotheses exist, such as the concept of abiogenesis (the idea that life originated from non-living matter), no one has definitively answered the question of how the first life forms arose.
  • The complexity of even the simplest single-celled organism far exceeds what random processes alone can explain.
  • As a Biomedical Scientist: Why I Believe in Intelligent Design

✴️ About Me: I grew up in a communist country as an atheist and spent years teaching university courses on the theory of evolution.

🧑‍🔬 As a Biomedical Scientist, I view myself as both intelligent and intellectual. I possess qualities of logical and critical thinking and am not easily influenced by religious teachings unless they are backed by clear and logical reasoning.

🔬 After years of biomedical research into the human body and diseases, I have come to understand that the complexity of genetic regulation, cellular functions, and the intricate interplay of the systems that sustain life reveals a sophistication that surpasses human comprehension.

🤖 Each discovery I made deepens my appreciation for the elaborate design and orchestration of maintaining life, highlighting biological processes’ remarkable order and precision.

📺 🖥️ ☎️  When we examine everything in our daily lives—desks, TVs, phones, computers, cars, etc.—can we find anything that human hands have not meticulously crafted? Is there any object that doesn’t show thoughtful design and planning?

🍑 🌽 🥬  The answer is a definitive no. Every item we use daily bears the imprint of human ingenuity and design. Everything we consume—grains, fruits, and vegetables—reflects the careful effort involved in cultivating and harvesting them.

🌞 🌝 🌍 🪐 Suppose human craftsmanship and ingenuity are evident in everything we make. Why is it so hard to accept that nature—the universe, the sun, the moon, the Earth, humans, animals, and plants—might also be the product of intelligent design?

Why resist acknowledging that the complexity and order in nature could reflect profound, intentional intelligence?

👉 This intelligent design is referred to as God’s creation.

🏟️ 🧬 The profound complexity of our biological system has led me to embrace the concept of divine creation. The idea that such a detailed and precisely regulated system could arise purely through natural evolution seems increasingly improbable.

🫀🕊️ The order, intricacy, coordination, purpose, and functionality of biological systems suggest they result from deliberate and intelligent design, not random processes. The more we uncover life’s mechanisms, the more it becomes evident that these intricacies point to a higher power—a creator—behind the universe and life within it.
